I can get the cable work much more consistently this way. Although, it's still finicky and requires repeated attempts to avoid the hocksmit error.Eventually, I got a powered USB hub from Amazon. I have a RealTone cable that I got with the original game when I bought it around the time of launch for Xbox 360. Disabling those integrated USB devices may help too (look for power usage in USB controller devices).The reason why this happens to some people and not others is that they have different USB controllers inside motherboard and they are probably buggy (I guess that's the issue with xHCI) or they have devices that take too much power.
